May 30th, members of DRG teamed up with staff at The Frick
Environmental Center located in Squirrel Hill to assist with some much
needed park maintenance. The Frick Environmental Center is a City of
Pittsburgh park facility, which provides information and activities
concerning the habitat, history and ecology of the Frick Woods Nature
Reserve. The 151-acre Frick Woods Nature Reserve offers a variety
of habitats filled with Pennsylvania’s native plants in its meadows and
woodlands. The center serves as the starting point of an extensive
trail system through the reserve used for educational programs and
nature walks.
DRG volunteers, along with family and
friends, assisted with the restoration of a handicap-accessible trail
through the woods. The clean up involved cutting back overgrown
trees and bushes and removing dirt and leaves from the path.
Volunteers also assisted with clearing out an overgrown space that will
be used as a children’s garden during some of the Environmental
Center’s upcoming summer camps. This is the second in a series of
activities DRG has planned for 2009 with the help of its community
service partner, Pittsburgh Cares.

On
March 21, 2009, members of The Duggan Rhodes Group (DRG) volunteered to
be “Big” for a day. DRG volunteers were matched one-on-one with
youth on the waiting list at Big Brother Big Sisters (BBBS) of Greater
Pittsburgh. BBBS of Greater Pittsburgh is one of the nation’s
premier mentoring organizations and has been serving the local area for
over 44 years. BBBS believes every child deserves a mentor –
someone to look up to and someone who cares. “It is through
these consistent mentoring relationships that we hope to provide the
children we serve with a greater opportunity to discover a potential
that they may not otherwise have realized they had,” said Cheryl Jones, Special Services Coordinator at BBBS of Greater Pittsburgh, “We do not ask our volunteers to be counselors, teachers or disciplinarians…simply friends.” DRG volunteers quickly became friends with their “littles” for
the day as they spent the afternoon bowling and having lunch.
Both the volunteers and children took full advantage of the bumpers on
the lanes, developing zigzag strategies to get a strike. The
activity gave volunteers ample opportunity to support the children and
help give them a confidence boost – in fact, they left the lanes
bragging about their bowling scores!
The “Big for a Day
“activity is the first of a series of activities DRG has planned for
2009 with the help of its community service partner, Pittsburgh
Cares. DRG is proud to be partnered with Pittsburgh Cares in its
effort to make a positive impact on the Pittsburgh Community and looks
forward to participating in future activities.
